“What? Distraction is good for success in my business?”
Yes, absolutely… providing it is planned.
There’s a concept called the 50/10 concept. It took me a while to get around to using it, and when I finally did, I was surprised at how much I actually achieved. I got more done, not just in my business, but also in the other areas of my life.
If you apply this concept, you can easily double your effectiveness and productivity, and what this means is that you can work fewer hours, get more done and spend more time with family or doing other things you love.
I wish I could take credit for it, but I can’t. I first heard Ryan Deiss (highly successful internet marketer) mention it on one of his tele-seminars, and then I heard Dave Lakhani (President of www.boldapproach.com, a leading business acceleration strategy, sales and marketing, consulting and training firm and author of many books, his latest being, “How To Sell When Nobody’s Buying”) talk about it in an interview with Eben Pagan (another extraordinarily successful internet marketer whose business generates $20m in annual sales).
Here’s a short video that explains the concept.
The reason it works so well is because it takes us a while to get started again if we are interrupted. Hence, it is important that the 50 minutes are pure uninterrupted time. So you save your time and effort in getting momentum going again from interruptions – that short phone call, the quick conversation, going to the loo, making a cup of coffee, checking emails… you get the idea.
The other surprise I had was how uplifting it was when it came to the 10 minute break. It truly felt like a mini-vacation. Very surprising, how light those 10 minutes felt, and the bonus was it felt much longer than 10 minutes! Sometimes, I’d go for a walk around the verandah, other times for a walk in the garden, or I’d fold up some of the clothes in the clean washing pile, or hang out the fresh washing to dry, or put a magazine away that had been lying around. I’d end my days getting more done, in less time, and feeling more refreshed than before I did the 50/10. My productivity and focus shot right through the roof with this simple concept.
So, how do you time yourself? Here’s an online stopwatch which allows you to count down your 50 minutes.
More done and more time off! A dream come true, especially for those of us who love living a business and lifestyle we love (or want to), all at the same time. What are you waiting for!
