Unleashing Natural Leadership

What are the requirements of a natural leader?

The concept of Unleashing Natural Leadership is central to the tenet of coaching, because Unleashing the Natural Leader is all about realising one’s own worth and in so doing empowering oneself at the deepest level.

There are many different definitions of leadership. People typically think that a leader is the person at the top of a team or organisation, someone with great charisma, good at public speaking, extroverted with a great vision and perhaps even egotistical. But we are now finding that leaders can also be quite the opposite - quiet and unassuming, with certain humility. Yes, there are skills to leadership, but there is also a much deeper element - the person themselves.

What's Your Talent?

The talent of the apple tree is to grow apples, just as it is the talent of the rose plant to grow roses. What's your talent?

The biggest challenge for many people, especially women, is firstly in realising what their talent is, because we often overlook our own talent. As we are growing up, we are taught to notice the parts that are “missing”. It’s the subjects that we are not so good at that are highlighted as needing improvement. At the same time, the areas in which we naturally and easily excel are often dismissed because there’s “nothing to fix”. So we compare ourselves against benchmarks as well as other people’s talents and wonder why we’re not as good, or why we’re not "good enough".

What are the requirements of a natural leader?

80/20 Theory - Get It Done in Less Time

What if you could spend fewer hours at work and still be as effective, if not more so?

What if you could:
  take less time complete a particular task;
  reduce the number of items on your to-do-list;
  have your days run more smoothly; and
  find it easier to achieve your outcomes

YOU CAN! And it's as easy (or challenging as you make it!) as training yourself into a different way of thinking, being and doing.

Unleash Your Natural Leader

Being a Natural Leader is about being the natural you, before you took on beliefs and assumptions about your environment, and your own identity. This article investigates the essence of the Natural Leader and provides some steps for personal development.

It used to be that leadership meant the person with the position and the title, leading from the front. It also used to be that leadership was a case of ‘Follow me!’ Not any more. Today, the most powerful leadership is to be found at any level. Today, it is about being able to discern how best to guide others to take the lead and still retain leadership.

Team Work - It's Not Just About The Team

So Harry S Truman said, "It’s possible to achieve almost anything as long as you are not worried about who gets the credit".

Indeed, giving and receiving positive feedback and credit is important for all teams. And for teamwork to be even more effective, giving credit and positive feedback to each and every individual on the team enables every team member to thrive, which in turn fuels the team spirit.

Coaching - Should You, or Shouldn't you?

Less than five years ago, not many people had heard of coaching, other than in the context of sport. Yet today, it seems to be on most people’s lips. Is it the latest management fad? Or is it here to stay?

And should you, the leader, also coach and be coached?

The value of coaching has been widely recognised over the last few years. For example, the Daily Telegraph noted in 2003 that good coaching is reported to yield a 600%-1000% return on investment, while the Harvard Business Review, in 2004, said, "The most valuable coaching fosters cultural change for the entire organisation."

What Does It Take To Influence With Integrity

We live in a world filled with more choices available than ever before. Organisational structures are flatter, people at all levels are able to take on more responsibility, and businesses are run largely by cross-functional teams of peers. And with the development of technology, information is easy to come by.

But it is the individual with knowledge, skills, experience and creativity whose contribution is paramount.

To bring out the person’s best, it is not about telling them what to do, but by eliciting their buy-in, so that they align with your thinking and decide, for themselves, that they want to contribute.

Unleashing the Natural Born Leader Within You

Today’s natural leader is not necessarily the one with the title. Nor is the natural leader the one imbued with all the knowledge. Knowledge is easy to acquire now, and with it, comes the ability to make informed choices and decisions. People no longer want to be told what to do; they want to control their own destiny, make their own decisions and learn from their own mistakes.

What this means is that the leader of today must be the person who is able to bring out their own uniqueness and that of others... to lead from within - from within self and from within the ranks. It is this uniqueness that will set any organisation apart from the rest.

Why Are There Not More Women Who Make it to the Top?

The "Women Breaking Through the Glass Ceiling" discussion held in June 2004 promised to be an inspiring evening of ideas and discussion. It was. There was plenty of enthusiasm for putting quotas in place for women in leadership positions, and training executive management on how better to appreciate the diversity of women and how to promote them.

Not only is it important that women move confidently into leadership, it is also imperative that organisations help women to do this. The report on The Bottom Line: Connecting Corporate Performance and Gender Diversity published by Catalyst in January 2004 states, "Companies with a higher representation of women in senior management positions financially outperform companies with proportionally fewer women at the top."
